This is a traditional devotion in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. She was chosen by God to be the mother of the Redeemer, Our Lord Jesus Christ. God wanted the Holy Family to be an example to us all, so this family needed the holiest of women to be its heart, that Jesus might have the best and most loving mother of them all. All the graces that any of the saints received, Mary received in a greater degree. From the instant of her conception, she was free from Original Sin, and moreover had the use of reason. Her whole life was a beautiful act of love of God, and she corresponded perfectly with every grace God gave her. She constantly grew in the spiritual life from height to height, never held back by imperfection or sin.
She is the greatest mere human to have ever walked the earth. The only one holier than she was Jesus Christ Himself -- but He, of course, was God as well as man.
