O hallowed town of Jesus' birth!
In thee a virgin mother's Child
Brought God from heav'n to earth.
2. No inn bade welcome at its door
To Mary on that holy night;
But in a stable Christ was born,
With only stars for light.
3. No pomp of kings, nor princes there,
With Joseph and the mother fair;
But angel voices from on high,
With glory filled the air.
4. O Bethlehem, we pray the Babe,
Once born within thy cheerless cave,
May grant the promised 'Peace on earth'
To us He came to save.
